It depends on the make up of the family. Let me give an example and use my country the UK. N20m at 800 to one is £25,000. It sounds like a lot of money, but if you have grown children, it is not.
If you have a child at university age, one doing their A’levels, and maybe one or two younger ones, N20m or £25,000 will not go too far. For a start you need accommodation. In London for a family of six you need at least a three bedroom house. That will cost between £2000 and £3,500 a month! Yes, every 30 calendar days.
You must sign a contract for a minimum of six to twelve months, which means you are now committed. Weda you get money or not, you are committed to pay until the end of your contract. Even at £2k a month, twelve months is £24,000. Though, you only have to pay two months equivalent to start.
You will need a car. You may not be able to cope with distributing four children in the morning on public transport. Besides, it will take you and your wards some time to adjust to the winter climate. Easy way out, you need a car that is not a jalopy. Jalopies will deliver you to the police, avoid that. A fair car will gulp £4,000 – £5,000.
Insurance and other ancillaries can be another £3,500 a year. You are on a foreign international licence. Insurance could cost much more than £3,500. Never ever drive in the UK without insurance. That is straight to jail. Fuel is not N185 per litre. It is around £2 (N1,600) per litre. On average you might get need 20 litres a week to run your home, that is £40 (N32k) per week.
Your child at University is an international student. Their cheap fees can be as high as £8,000 – £10,000 a year, committed for three years. The child doing A level is also an international student. That could be around £4,500 a year. The younger ones will get free education, but you will buy uniforms, books, and pay for school activities. If dem join clubs, or school trips, you die well. More money.
Dem no dey cease light for London. But gas, electric, and water rate in a busy house can collect another £500 – £700 per month. And no be say you dey waste am o.
What of community charge? Every flat or house or even room must pay community charge. For a room it can be £100 per month. A flat can be £200. A house can be £350. It depends on the value of the house and what valuation band that falls into. Your community charge allows your bins to be collected and your streets cleaned and lit at night. It also covers some fire service charge.
Food is not too expensive, but it is not cheap. The good thing is that there is no rubber Chinese chicken. It is real chicken meat. But you will pay. Food for a family of six can cost you £600 – £800 a month.
But una go eat well make una fresh. I now ask you, change still dey inside your £25,000 so? Europe is mega expensive. This example is for the average family of six. Nobody wants to discourage you from Jappa, but be aware of what you are doing.
I and my family have lived in England for over 30 years. I have actually spent most of the last two years in Nigeria. I no run oo. I am taking care of the Nigeria end of my matters. Last week I got a call from a friend here in Nigeria to say his friend went to England two weeks ago with his wife and two children, one is four and the other is eight months old.
The gist basically is that they have run out of money after only two weeks.they did not have £25k, they had less, but money don finish. No accomodation, no food, no work. So I asked the guy why he took such a risk, and he said he is believing God that something will happen.
Mumu!! First of all, if social services find out that your children are in such a precarious situation they will take them away, and it will take you a lifetime and a fortune to get them back.
So I had to start making frantic phone calls to friends to help accommodate this family. He cannot stay at my house because there is full with Nigerians and their poor planning and hope on God.
Luckily, they are temporarily not on the street anymore. The help I managed to get is not for long. The parents will both need to secure jobs to run their home. The UK is in a massive recession. I do not know how it will go for this family.
Nobody say no Jappa ooo, but make better arrangements please. Na beg I dey, because me when dey Nigeria don dey support families when dey London. It is not making sense.
If you have N20m, why on earth do you want to leave Nigeria? Why can you not set up a business and live very well? Is it the status thing? Because I can tell you that it is a fantasy. Anyhow anyhow you will desire to come back home. I am currently working on that. So why throw away a good block to go hustle?
