The Federal Government has announced that the implementation of the import duty waiver on essential food items, including rice, maize, and wheat, will commence next week.

The 150-day duty-free window, approved in July, aims to combat rising food inflation across the country.

Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adeniyi, revealed that the delay in implementation was to ensure consideration of all stakeholders’ interests, including farmers.

He assured Nigerians that imported items already in the country would be cleared without duty and taxes.

Adeniyi expressed optimism that the temporary suspension of duty and taxes would lead to reduced food prices.
