Africa has marked a historic milestone in its space exploration journey with the official inauguration of the African Space Agency (AfSA) in Egypt’s Space City, Cairo.

The ceremony, attended by dignitaries from around the world, including ministers and ambassadors, signifies Africa’s commitment to space sovereignty and continental integration.

Key highlights of the inauguration was tbe unveiling of  the African Space Agency official logo, designed by Cameroonian artist Remy Fadhil Bouelet, symbolizing Africa’s cultural heritage, technological aspirations, and commitment to sustainable development.

It also includes the signing of  a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the European Space Agency (ESA) to strengthen Earth observation programs, expand joint training initiatives, and provide technical support for AfSA’s institutional development.

The goodwill messages were delivered by top representatives of global space institutions, including ESA, NASA, UAE Space Agency, CNES, JAXA, and UNOOSA, reaffirming international support for Africa’s space ambitions.

African national heads of space agencies from Gabon, Kenya, Nigeria, Angola, and Egypt delivered remarks showcasing regional commitments to collaborative space development.

H.E. Dr. Tidiane Ouattara, President of the Council of the African Space Council, delivered the welcome address, emphasizing Africa’s collective strength and goodwill in ensuring AfSA’s sustainability.

While, H.E. Ayman Ashour, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Egypt, delivered the keynote address, highlighting the strategic importance of space to Africa’s development trajectory.

Dr. Valanathan Munsami, former CEO of SANSA and Chair of the AU Space Working Group, provided insights into Africa’s space trajectory, emphasizing unity, innovation, and sustainable development.
