NIRSAL launches rail haulage for cattle, agric produce

The Nigeria Incentive-Based Risk Sharing System for Agricultural Lending (NIRSAL) has initiated a scheme to move cattle from the northern part of the country to markets in the south by rail starting next week.

The Managing Director/CEO of NIRSAL, Mr Aliyu Abdulhameed said: “The launch of the farm to market initiative is a tribute to the vision of President Muhammadu Buhari who made agriculture a central component of the federal government economic response to the steep and long standing fall in the global price of oil.

Abdulhameed said the project is a direct translation of President Buhari initiative of diversification from oil to agriculture and solid minerals.

He said when the president talked on the diversification, it was the responsibility of agencies like NIRSAL, CBN and ministries to initiate policies towards achieving the objectives. NIRSAL is an initiative of the Central Bank of Nigeria to promote the agricultural value chain.
