Africa's food market to hit $1 trillion by 2030
  • Post by Admin on sunday, March 05, 2015

The food market in Africa may be worth over $1 trillion by 2030, the Africa Agriculture Status Report (AASR), has said. The report, commissioned by the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) and launched at this year's African Green Revolution Forum (AGRF) in Cote d'Ivoire, said agriculture will be Africa's quiet revolution.

It added that the revolution would focus on Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and smallholder farmers, who will create high productivity jobs and sustainable economic growth that failed to materialise from mineral deposits and increased urbanisation.

The report said despite 37 per cent of the population now living in urban centres, most jobs have been created in lower paid, less productive services rather than in industry, with this service sector accounting for more than half of the continent's Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
